How to Measure Furniture and Decor Before Buying
Good measurements reduce surprises, especially with one-of-a-kind furniture and decor that cannot simply be exchanged for another size.
Measure the item in three dimensions
Record overall width, depth and height. Add seat height, tabletop height, drawer depth, frame thickness or other dimensions that affect use.
Measure the route, not just the room
Check doors, hallways, stairs, elevators, corners and vehicle openings. The final destination may have enough space even when the path to it does not.
Account for projections
Handles, feet, trim, frames, lampshades and decorative elements can extend beyond the main body.
For wall decor, record hanging details
Measure the full frame and note orientation, weight when known, and the type/location of existing hanging hardware without assuming that hardware is appropriate for every wall.
